Proposal: Pro Life- Abortion

I am proposing why I believe that abortion should be illegal in the United States. I believe that every human life is valuable whether it is in the womb or not. I believe that there is a purpose and a reason behind every child conceived, and I believe that each and every one of them has a beating heart that deserves a chance at life and a chance for a future.

The Issue

Problem Defined

I'm trying to solve the issue of abortion in America. I believe that abortion should be illegal and that every beating heart matters, even the unborn. I'd like the reduce the number of abortions that are happening in the United States and eventually end it all together.

Background

1.
Pro-ChoiceMORE

Proponents, those who identify themselves as pro-choice, contend that choosing abortion is a right that should not be limited by governmental or religious authority, which outweighs any right claimed for an embryo or fetus. They say that pregnant women will resort to unsafe illegal abortions if there is no legal option.

2.
Pro-LifeMORE

Opponents, those who identify themselves as pro-life, contend that individual human life begins at fertilization, and therefore abortion is the immoral killing of an innocent human being. They say abortion inflicts suffering on the unborn child, and that it is unfair to allow abortion when couples who cannot biologically conceive are waiting to adopt.

3.
History MORE

The US Supreme Court has declared abortion to be a "fundamental right" guaranteed by the US Constitution.

The landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, decided on Jan. 22, 1973 in favor of abortion rights, remains the law of the land. The 7-2 decision stated that the Constitution gives "a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy," and that "This right of privacy... is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy." [49]

4.
HistoryMORE

Abortion is murder. The killing of an innocent human being is wrong, even if that human being has yet to be born. Unborn babies are considered human beings by the US government.

The federal unborn Victims of Violence Act, which was enacted "to protect unborn children from assault and murder," states that under federal law, anybody intentionally killing or attempting to kill an unborn child should "be punished... for intentionally killing or attempting to kill a human being." The act also states that an unborn child is a "member of the species homo sapiens." [126] At least 38 states have passed similar fetal homicide laws. [127]

5.
Cons of AbortionMORE

Life begins at conception, so unborn babies are human beings with a right to life.

Fetuses feel pain during the abortion procedure.

Abortion is the killing of a human being, which defies the word of God.

Abortions reduce the number of adoptable babies

6.
Pros of AbortionMORE

Reproductive choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies.

Women who receive abortions are less likely to suffer mental health problems than women denied abortions.

A baby should not come into the world unwanted.

The Solution

Proposed Actions

1.
Solutions to end abortionMORE

There are two key ways that are believed to reduce abortion. One is by making it less necessary or by making it less available. This seems like the only former approach is humane, effective, and just.

2.
SolutionsMORE

Those who oppose abortion in all or most circumstances generally think the best way to reduce the number of abortions is to make it illegal. By eliminating legal availability, they believe abortion will cease to exist. They hold this view despite evidence that women continue to have abortions in countries where it is outlawed, under illegal and unsafe conditions that often result in terrible tragedy.

Close to 70,000 women a year die from unsafe abortion and numerous others suffer grave injuries, including infection, hemorrhaging, and infertility. This hurts women, their families, and communities, but it does very little to reduce abortion.

3.
SolutionsMORE

Making abortion less necessary is by far the better approach. The first way we can do that is to reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy. Half of all pregnancies in this country are unintended, and those half end in abortion. Unintended pregnancy could be reduced significantly if we showed true commitment to:

1) comprehensive sexuality education that includes medically accurate information about abstinence and contraception

2) insurance coverage of and public funding for family planning services

3) greater access to emergency contraception

4) programs that curb domestic violence and sexual abuse. Women who are able to avoid unintended pregnancy do not have to make the difficult decision of whether to have an abortion.

Expected ResultsMORE

I expect us to be able to reduce the number of abortions that are happening in America by coming up with better forms of birth control, precautions, and education.

Budget

I don't think a budget is nessacarily needed for this, I would accept as much help as I got but I think we need a solution to the problem first.
